Cinema halls per person in India
How many people each hall serves, state by state and town by town, and where India has none. 4,264 halls that sell tickets online, set against WorldPop's 2020 population grid.
About 141.3 crore people live in India, by WorldPop's 2020 estimate, and on 23 September 2026 4,264 cinema halls were selling tickets on BookMyShow or District: one hall for every 3.3 lakh people. Only 26% of Indians live within 5 km of one, 40% within 10 km and 65% within 20 km.
The spread between states is wide. Andhra Pradesh has a hall for every 83,000 people; Jammu & Kashmir has one for every 21 lakh. In Delhi, 99% of people live within 10 km of a hall; in Jammu & Kashmir, 13% do.

How we count
Halls. The 4,264 cinema halls on this site: every one listed on BookMyShow or District on 23 September 2026, plus one a local check found open selling at its counter. Single screens that sell only at the counter are mostly missing, so for a town that has one, the numbers here read as "no hall that sells tickets online".
People. WorldPop's 2020 population density grid for India: 1 km cells, unconstrained, not adjusted to UN totals (www.worldpop.org, CC BY 4.0). It is a model built from census and satellite data, so it is right for comparing places, not for exact counts. All figures are rounded.
Around a hall, a town, an area. People within a straight-line circle of the hall (2, 5 or 10 km), each grid cell weighted by how much of it the circle covers. A town's figure is everyone within 5 km of any of its halls, each person counted once; an area page uses 2 km. A PIN code's figure is everyone inside India Post's boundary for it.
States and districts. People summed inside each state's boundary and inside the 641 districts of the 2011 Census (a district made since then is inside its 2011 parent). Within 5, 10 and 20 km counts everyone that close to a hall in any state.
Dense places without a hall. Touching 1 km cells of 4,000 or more people per square km, holding 50,000 or more people in all, where no cell is within 10 km of a hall. The UN's 1,500 per square km test for an urban centre swallows whole stretches of the Gangetic countryside at this grid size, so we use a stricter one.
