Multiplexes are 26% of the cinemas that sell online and single screens 19%. For 47% the platforms did not show enough to tell: they are listed on BookMyShow only, which does not publish screen counts.

Andhra Pradesh has the most cinemas that sell online, 649. The four southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka together have 1,815, 43% of the national total.

Languages on screen

On 23 September 2026, District showed which languages 2,030 cinemas had shows in: Hindi at 1,134, Telugu at 619, Tamil at 340, English at 328, Malayalam at 178, Gujarati at 133, Punjabi at 78, Marathi at 63. A cinema showing films in two languages counts under both.

What this count leaves out

Cinemas that sell tickets only at the counter are not on BookMyShow or District, so they are not in the 4,264. Open map data (OpenStreetMap and Overture) lists another 3,864 places called cinemas that do not sell online. We keep them on the map as unverified, because in a street-by-street check of Jaipur 16 of 18 such listings had closed. We also hold 61 cinemas with evidence of closing; they are on the closed cinema halls page.

Screen counts are floors: District shows the screens that have shows on a given day, so 5,381 screens across 2,114 cinemas is the least those cinemas have. Read more in how this map is made.
