Why list closed cinemas at all?

Because they are part of each town's story, and because an old map pin for a closed cinema is exactly what sends people to a locked building. Here they are labelled closed and kept out of every "near me" result.

How do you know a cinema has closed?

Every entry names its evidence: a local check by someone who knows the town, a "disused" or "was" tag in OpenStreetMap, a closing date in Wikidata, or a name that records it ("Old ... Theatre", "closed").

Is this every closed cinema in India?

No. It is the 61 we hold evidence for. Open map data lists 3,864 more places that no longer sell tickets online; many of those have closed too, but we mark them unverified until someone confirms.

About this data

A cinema is on this map when it sells tickets on BookMyShow or District (we read both on 23 September 2026), or when someone who knows the town has confirmed it open. Screen counts are floors: screens with shows on the day we checked. Cinemas open, close and renovate between checks, so confirm on the booking page before you travel. Places found only in open map data are shown separately as unverified, because most of those we have checked had closed.
